carnet de notes 400

italo calvino’s 1972 novel reserves a dear place in our libraries, architectural or otherwise, for its vivid recollections of cities and their curiosities, courtesy of a certain marco polo as he narrates to kublai khan. for though there is a certain kind of sensory appeal that is captured in the details of places, the real beauty of invisible cities lies in the masking of underlying notions of time, identity and language within these details. image © karina puente frantzen

japanese architect kengo kuma has completed the façade and interior design of a 10-storey hotel near tokyo’s skytree observation tower. conceived as an ‘art exhibit’, one@tokyo is located in oshiage — an area which combines the historic feeling of the country’s edo era with a lively sense of tokyo’s modern metropolis. at ground level, kuma and his team have installed a dynamic lattice of timber planks that refers to the factories found in the region’s downtown district. ph keishin horikoshi/ss tokyo

chief architect sun tianwen of shanghai hip-pop architectural decoration design co. captures the spirit of japanese cuisine in his latest waka haiku setsugekka restaurant project. he explains that, individually, the ultra-clear glass engraved with the sakura, the blue led light band and complete black background of sushi counter do not necessarily express the sense of zen — however, only when all of these elements mix harmoniously, then an appropriate design is obtained. ph zhang jing
